Landrover Freelander - Td4 (82 kW/110 bhp)
Date of manufacture: october 2000 - december 2006
|
|
|
The match between car and caravan is plausible in accordance with a mix of European standards. However, according to the British Towing Code the percentage (loaded caravan / kerbweight tow car) is 93%.
The towing performances of this Landrover with your Abbey are good (performance index = 94 km/h or 58 mph).
You may expect more than adequate performances from this outfit. On flat roads you can come along provided you've selected the right gear, in which case top gear is applicable in all cases.
On motorway inclines you will be able to come along provided you've selected the right gear. On steep roads you have more than sufficient power to keep going. On hill starts there will be sufficient power to get going, provided the wheels have traction.

= 26%Towing with this outfit is a complete pleasure, can sit at 50mph in top gear on most single carriageways , and easily cruises on motorways, 4x4 comes in handy when backing on to our steep driveway.

= 16%freelander sports with 30% stiffer suspension (140k nose weight ) stops most of the pitching and maintains a level ride ,not funny when you have to replace the tyres though (18 inch wheels ) but good road holding

= 18%Excellent towcar, should have got one years ago,it tows well on single carriageways easily in 5th gear at 50mph & motorways are not a problem at all, dont know the caravan is on the back. The 4x4 comes in really handy on wet campsites, no churning grass up with wheelspin like front wheel drive cars.
The Landrover towing a Bailey Ranger S5 470/4 (975) kg reviewed by Martin:
= 47%
= 100 km/u
= 20%My Freelander Sport manual TD4 towed our 1994 Perle Adonis 3,500 miles down to southern Italy and back, in 40 plus degrees (in places) as though it wasn't there. The stiffened sport suspension makes it an ideal set up for stability and comfort, and 4x4 just adds to the ability to place the caravan exactly where you want it in slippery fields. Cannot recommend this car enough for the job.
The Landrover towing a Ace Award Firestar (1463) kg reviewed by Brian:

= 15%I,ve towed a few vans with this car and the higher position and heavier suspension makes for a very relaxed tow. A tuning chip enhancement makes all the difference to towing at low speed which is the cars downfall..n he whole thought a great tow car!!

Any body with an idea most welcome?

= 17%A stable towing outfit, but could do with a little more power for motorway work (or a smaller caravan), its better on rural roads. I was very impressed with the cars towing ability in deep snow. My ownership has been spoilt by a few problems with the car including annoying rattles and a shuddering clutch on steep hill starts when towing. Get around 37mpg normal driving.
